Whilst we were in Canada Water to get some sports clothes for our holidays, we remembered that there was a gluten-free restaurant around. Leadbelly’s Bar and Kitchen in Canada Water, London SE16 has a 98% gluten-free day time menu and 100% gluten-free evening menu. Our bellies were certainly rumbling, and there was no going back once we saw this place and the menu.
To our surprise, it was the biggest place to eat on the square. We had a choice of sitting in the buzzy atmosphere of the bar to eat or in the restaurant area. The decor was very cool and funky, the walls were covered with quirky pictures, neon signs and lots of incandescent lights hanging over the wooden and soft furnishing. In the bar area, you can choose to sit either on comfy seats or up at high tables with stalls. The bar was quite buzzy and light and I quite fancied sitting amongst the cool atmosphere, but the kids spotted the American diner benches in the more formal restaurant. I say formal but it is still quite relaxed in an American Diner way.
The menu is vast, with a choice of traditional food such as fish and chips, chicken wings, spare ribs, steak and ale pie. And then the specials menu had some nice juicy steaks, a tempting vegetarian / vegan dish (roast butternut squash tagine) and fish dishes (pan-fried halibut with turnip puree brown shrimp, samphire and dill oil) which all sounded rather tasty.
I spotted straight away the halloumi fries, which I immediately ordered whilst we were pondering over the menu. The kids were well set on fish and chips which was gluten and egg free. I had the pan fried halibut and my husband indulged in a burger.
So rarely do we get such a choice especially in such a large place. The prices were reasonable, in particular, the kids’ large portion of fish and chips which is a bargain at £4.95 each.
My favourite was the halloumi fries, they were delicious, and perfect to snack on whilst we chose our meal. They didn’t last long at all.
We were hungry from all that shopping and this was a perfect treat. Everyone tucked into their meal. The kids ate their entire plate of fish and chips; my halibut was a bit overcooked, but the sauce was lovely and the burger was perfectly large and juicy.
I’d definitely be back again to Leadbelly’s, the choice of foods that are available and the atmosphere was more than I’ve seen anywhere. Canada Water is pretty convenient for us so we’ve planned to come back soon to check out the brunch menu. In my 20s (before kids) I spent many mornings meeting up with friends for brunch. Looking at this menu I realised we haven’t been out for brunch for years – mainly because it tends to be a local thing and there is no gluten free option anywhere near us (and prob not near many people ). But now there is Leadbelly’s!! – we just have to make sure we don’t get dragged into and inevitably overspend in the neighbouring Decathalon.
AND whilst you’re here – I’m now running an Instagram competition with Leadbelly’s who are kindly offering a free meal and drink for the winner picked by random on Wednesday 4th July 2018. Head over to my Instagram now and GOOD LUCK!!!
